What are the divisions and levels of performance of American college sports teams?

The division that a particular university participates in depends on the size of the university and the number of sponsored sports that they participate in. These divisions are the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) I, II and III, as well as the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics). The NCAA I is the highest rated and largest division, followed by the NCAA II and NAIA leagues. There are many NCAA II and NAIA teams that are better than some NCAA I teams, but the overall ranking of these divisions is lower. While universities in the NCAA III do have coached teams, they do not offer scholarships.
